Theatre Studies

TKHC has integrated Theatre Studies into the G7-G8 Foundation Years Programme with the strong belief that Theatre Studies brings not only theatre knowledge and cultural exposure, but also valuable benefits to students’ personal growth as it allows students to express themselves artistically, gain confidence, unleash their creativity, and give them ample opportunity to skillfully cooperate and communicate with others through participating in this art form.

The G7-G8 Foundation Years Programme in Theatre Studies aims to equip students with a good grounding of drama skills and theatre knowledge, including physical theatre, devised theatre, improvisation, and the understanding of scripted work and world theatres through creating, performing, appreciating and analysing drama. With the foundation built in the programme, students will be prepared for advanced drama and theatre studies in the future.

Another special feature of Theatre Studies at TKHC is that drama is taught across subjects. This allows students to not just listen to knowledge shared by teachers but also to experience the process of learning different subject matter using an entirely different approach and perspective.

In Grade 7, students are introduced to William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Greek Theatre and Greek mythology. Students create their own Greek Gods and Goddesses and the myths about them. After learning more about myths and legends, students create myths for their house mascots as well. Students also experience the process drama of Kensuke’s Kingdom, to better understand the context of the book for English lessons. In Grade 8, students study The Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen and An Inspector’s Calls by J.B.Priestley. Students explore more about the stage setting and acting based on scripted work and how to write play scripts.

In Theatre Studies at TKHC, we aim to provide students with chances to offer creative solutions and their critical and constructive opinions towards issues discussed. With a fictional role and context, students feel safe and secure as they explore scenarios, make decisions and be adventurous and imaginative when sharing ideas.
