Mathematics

At TKHC, Mathematics aims to prepare all students with the ability, perception and academic capabilities to address further developments in mathematics, as well as to equip those students with the mathematical skills required for their studies and lives in general.

The Foundation Years Programme in Mathematics is designed for lower secondary students to get experience and build up the basic skills and knowledge in mathematics that can promote their future development in different disciplines. In Grade 7 and 8, the content of mathematics learning focuses on the needs of students, engaging them and stimulating their desire to learn its fundamental principles. Students learn about real examples of how mathematics plays a part in their everyday lives. They see how mathematics is useful and relevant to them in their lives, and they are encouraged to apply this knowledge to their surroundings. Students use ICT tools to display different information, to explore and model situations, and to find solutions to various problems. These skills have numerous and significant applications in a wide range of fields.

The International GCSE Programme in Mathematics is designed for upper secondary students to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques, which enables them to acquire a foundation of mathematical skills for International AL or IBDP Mathematics subjects, or related areas. In Grade 9 and 10, students enjoy using and applying mathematical techniques and concepts, and become confident in using mathematics to solve problems in two separate subjects, namely Mathematics (Specification A) and Further Pure Mathematics.

Students in TKHC are required to study the subject Mathematics (Specification A). The course is tiered to allow all students to achieve and progress in their mathematical studies, and balance a thorough knowledge and understanding of the subject, which helps to prepare students for their future studies or employment. While the course of Further Pure Mathematics is optional for students to choose, they can challenge themselves by taking the course according to their own study plan. It provides a strong foundation of mathematical knowledge for students studying mathematics at a higher level, and extends mathematical techniques beyond those covered in International GCSE in Mathematics.

Our students are equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st Century by cultivating their critical and creative thinking, mathematical inquiry and reasoning skills, and the ability to use mathematics to solve problems in their daily lives and surroundings.
